Behaviour after a lumbar puncture (cerebrospinal fluid puncture)

• Head and neck pain: After the lumbar puncture, pain can be caused by moving too quickly or too much, but also by sitting up too quickly from a lying position. This usually improves again when lying down.
• Nausea/vomiting
• Pain at the injection site
• Very rarely numbness or weakness in the legsdue to temporary nerve irritation.
• Signs of infection: Each puncture results in an increased risk of infection. Signs of this can include fever, neck stiffness, localised redness, swelling or overheating at the puncture site.
• Allergic reaction: The material used, such as disinfectants or plasters, can lead to an allergic reaction in the event of intolerance. Signs of this can include a rash and itching.

• Allow for a rest period: If possible, your child should not move or walk around much immediately after the puncture, as this can favour the headache.
• Bed rest does not help to prevent headaches, which is why lying down is not necessary. It may be helpful if your child rests in a comfortable position for the next few hours.
• If a headache occurs, the discomfort can be alleviated by lying down.
• Drink plenty of fluids to prevent headaches.
